What you actually get

Three promises, written like architecture.

Keep an encrypted archive, find saved messages, and choose how to back them up. Optional Delivery is separate from encrypted backup.

Encrypted archive and backups.

The local archive uses SQLCipher with AES-256. Backup files use AES-256-GCM. Android Keystore protects device keys using available hardware, with a software fallback. Optional Delivery sends readable copies to destinations you configure.

Search your saved messages.

Use full-text search to find saved message text and sender information in your archive. Results depend on the messages retained on your device.

Prepare for a new phone.

Verify a backup before restoring it into HashKeep. For a new phone, create a portable backup with a passphrase and keep that phrase safe. Portable local .hkv backups are also available in Internal Testing from version 0.2.0. Scheduled backups and device-bound local files still need the original device key.

How it works

Three steps to your archive.

Grant the required permissions, choose your backup settings, and check backup status. Android can defer background work; a schedule is not a guarantee that a backup has completed.

STEP 01

Install & grant SMS read.

HashKeep requests SMS read and receive permissions, never SEND_SMS. Import copies of existing SMS into your encrypted HashKeep archive. Your system Messages inbox is not encrypted or replaced by HashKeep.

STEP 02

Connect Drive (or don't).

Connect your own Google Drive using the drive.file scope for app-created files. Manual backups are available in Free; scheduled backups require Pro. Connecting Drive alone does not create a portable backup.

STEP 03

Search, restore, audit.

Search saved messages, restore into HashKeep, or export CSV in Free and PDF in Pro. Optional Delivery sends readable copies of backed-up messages through your SMTP, Telegram or Discord destination; those providers and recipients can read them.

What we don't do

Privacy by what's missing.

Encrypted backup, optional readable Delivery, and content-free diagnostics have different data paths. Here are the boundaries.

We can't send SMS.

The Android manifest does not request SEND_SMS. HashKeep does not send carrier SMS; optional Delivery uses network services instead.

Access limited to backup files.

The drive.file scope gives HashKeep access to app-created backup files, not your entire Drive.

No message-storage backend.

We do not operate a HashKeep message-storage backend. Your selected Drive and Delivery providers process data you send to them. Website hosting and optional diagnostics use separate services.

We don't read your contacts.

The app does not request contacts access. Message sender addresses are stored with your archive.

We don't profile messages.

Content-free Firebase diagnostics can be switched off in Settings. Error messages and causes are sanitized; diagnostic stack traces remain. Message addresses and bodies are not diagnostic fields.

We don't hold your key.

We do not escrow your keys or passphrase. New-phone restore needs a portable backup and its passphrase. Device-bound backups need the original device key.

FAQ

The questions worth answering.

Is HashKeep actually encrypted?

The local archive uses SQLCipher (AES-256); backup files use AES-256-GCM. Android Keystore uses StrongBox or other hardware where available, with a software fallback. This protects stored archives and backups, not readable copies you choose to send through Delivery.

What's in Free vs Pro?

Free includes encrypted archive, search, manual backup and local export, CSV export, restore and verification, optional app lock, and 30-day local retention. Free Delivery allows one active rule without advanced filters. Pro adds scheduled Drive backup, PDF export, longer retention, audit-log PDF export, additional active Delivery rules, advanced filters and cadence controls. Pro is an optional one-time purchase; Google Play shows your local price.

Why not iOS?

HashKeep supports Android 9 and later. There is no iOS version.

What if I lose my phone?

Create a portable backup with a passphrase before losing the original phone. For a Drive backup, connect the same Google account on the new phone and choose that backup in HashKeep. Portable local .hkv backups without Google Drive are available in Internal Testing from version 0.2.0. Select the portable file and enter its passphrase to restore into HashKeep, not Android Messages. Scheduled backups and device-bound local files need the original key; older files do not become portable.

What does Delivery do?

Delivery is available now for SMTP email, Telegram and Discord. You configure and test a destination before saving it. Delivery sends readable copies of backed-up messages, not encrypted backup files or carrier SMS. Destination providers and recipients can read the sender, message text and timestamp. Generic HTTPS webhooks are not supported.

Do you support MMS, RCS, attachments?

HashKeep archives SMS text. MMS, RCS, attachments and call-log backup are not supported. Do not rely on them being captured as SMS.

What about Google Play policy?

HashKeep is published on Google Play. It requests SMS read and receive permissions for its archive and does not request SEND_SMS. Google Play availability is not an endorsement by Google. See the privacy policy for encrypted backup and optional readable Delivery disclosures.

Who makes HashKeep?

HashKeep is published by Icemint LLC under the Icemint Labs name, based in Sheridan, Wyoming, USA. For support, contact hello@hashkeep.app.
